TODAY'S PRODUCERS OF ENGINEERED CERAMICS ARE FACED WITH ACHIEVING TIGHTER TOLERANCES, IMPROVED SURFACE FINISH, AND PRODUCTIVITY. THESE REQUIREMENTS HAVE PLACED AN IMPORTANCE ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF DURABLE DIAMOND TOOLS WHICH ARE CAPABLE OF ACHIEVING HIGH RATES OF STOCK REMOVAL WHILE LEAVING A SURFACE WHICH IS WITHIN TOLERANCES AND WHICH EXHIBITS THE SMOOTHNESS AND UNIFORMITY WHICH IS DEMANDED IN MOST APPLICATIONS. A CRITICAL COMPONENT OF THE PERFORMANCE OF A TOOL IS THE BONDING METHOD UTILIZED FOR SECURING DIAMONDS TO THE WORKING SURFACE. THIS PAPER REVIEWS THE PERFORMANCE OF THE COMMONLY UTILIZED BONDING METHODS AS WELL AS HIGHLIGHTS NEW DEVELOPMENTS.
