Single duct VAV terminal units have developed a great deal in the last ten years. They have evolved from high pressure devices with limited maximum/minimum range to low pressure units having variable maximum/minimum down to shut off with pressure independent performance. The control elements have improved through the years and indeed are responsible for the improved capability of these units. The latest generation of control development has produced the "Dead Band" thermostat. This type of thermostat comes in several forms and enables building owners to comply with the recently promulgated United States Department of Energy Building Temperature Restrictions. This decree allows no cooling below 78°F and no heating above 65°F. When the "Dead Band" thermostat is used with Fan Powered VAV Terminal units a whole new exciting variety of HVAC combinations becomes possible.
