The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of cleaning a full-scale dual media filter with different combinations of air and water flow rates, and to deduce from this data the flow combinations that provide optimum cleaning. This study is the first full-scale evaluation of the effectiveness of collapse-pulsing for cleaning filter media. The authors recommend that incorporating the information contained in this study into the design parameters for water treatment plant filters can lead to efficient and effective backwashing thereby ensuring longer filter runs and prevention of mudballs and other problems caused by ineffective backwash procedures.
