This article summarizes drinking water standards that apply to member states of the European Community, considers the extent to which the standards have been met, and discusses likely future developments. Problems common to the member states include compliance with all water quality parameters, nitrates, pesticides and herbicides, and lead. Includes 17 references, tables.
