The Canaveral Port Authority (CPA) was issued a permit to construct a class V, group three,
aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) injection well system. The purpose of the ASR well is to test
inject the well using potable water to determine its potential for use as a reclaimed water ASR
injection well system. This well will be the shallowest test ASR system in the State of Florida as
it will be completed into the confined surficial aquifer system. The maximum storage capacity
for the ASR system is 150 million gallons. Favorable testing has already been performed on an
exploratory well in the same area.
During injection testing, the storage zone will be analyzed using the electrical resistivity surface
geophysical method. The geophysical analysis will help determine the horizontal and vertical
extent of the storage zone, as well as the storage capacity of the injection zone. This method will
also be used to estimate the potential recovery rate by monitoring the withdrawal of the injectate
during recovery. The final monitoring plan for the system will be fine tuned with the data
collected during testing to select the best locations for monitoring wells. Includes 7 references, figure.
