A well-calibrated water distribution system model can be a
critical tool that supports the preparation of an emergency response plan (ERP) and
may be essential in managing the response to an intentional contamination event that involves biological or
chemical agents. Rapid response that isolates the migration of the contamination may be the only credible way to
convince the public that their drinking water is safe. This slide presentation demonstrates how modeling six simulations
of a
terrorist chemical attack to a
water system can be used to develop an ERP that includes the following:
notification of customers in Pressure Zone II to use bottled water;
flushing at Hydrants J-14 and J-36 per Scenario VI, to remove the contaminant from the system; and, a
determination of when the system would return to normal operation.
