Laser sensors and laser vision systems have been under development for over 20 years in several parts of the world simultaneously. They are used more and more today to guide and control the operation of welding robots and automatic welding machines in almost all segments of the manufacturing industry. The reasons to apply this still relatively expensive technology are numerous; quality assurance improvements, technical feasibility, increased welding speed, saving of consumable materials, shortage of trained manpower, etc., are some of the reasons that prevail in the choice of implementing laser sensing technology.
