This includes engaging with local communities and networks to demonstrate commitment to continuing professional development (CPD) and to the engineering profession. The influence of role models has proved to be a determining factor in young engineer’s career decisions. This research paper explains the aims of the "Making Engineering Hot" Campaign, an outreach programme put together by the Association For BME Engineers (AFBE-UK), which encourages young people from ethnic minority backgrounds in the UK particularly within inner city schools to consider engineering as a viable career path. A demographic survey has been conducted to assess the impact of age, gender, ethnicity, social background on the career choice of 100 secondary school students from the most deprived parts of Greater London. The results showed a positive correlation between the influence of role models and students’ career decisions in general. The survey also sought to evaluate the influence of the campaign on pursue a field of study in engineering related subjects amongst young people of black and minority ethnic (BME) origin.
