To increase energy efficiency and promote better management of central plant equipment, many chilled water systems are designed to vary flow in relation to load. Three-way valves and bypass piping are generally not used in these systems. Even though the flow bypass elements have been eliminated, many of these systems are still unable to control flow demand in relation to load. The penalty is higher energy usage and more difficult management of chilled water pumping equipment. The purpose of this paper is to introduce improved methods for controlling chilled water coils and demonstrate these methods in an actual application.
