The World Health Organization is revising the third edition of its International Standards for Drinking Water (1971) and preparing an internationally applicable set of Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality, taking into consideration the special practical needs of developing countries. This paper reviews some of the principles and approaches used in developing the new water quality guidelines. Includes 17 references, tables.
