To make claims about the superiority of any new method or technology convincing, one must provide tangible proof of better properties, processing and economy. For many years, gas nitriding was not a popular surface hardening process because ingrained in collective memory was the inherent brittleness of the nitrided layer. A significant breakthrough in nitriding technology was accomplished with the introduction of controlled gas nitriding - a process utilizing the nitriding potential as controlling parameter. This process can be implemented to bring out best features which include properties of the nitrided part, with elimination of brittleness, along with process facilitation and economy.
