As part of the initial phase of the energy efficiency program for the City of Tampa, a feasibility study of potential pumping system modification at the Hillsborough River Water Treatment Plant (HRWTP) was performed. The feasibility study had the following major objectives: determine the optimum short-term means of operating the existing pumping system at the water treatment plant; determine the most cost-effective, long-term means to power and operate the pumping units; describe in detail the facilities needed to convert to the recommended method of operation; and provide a cost estimate of the proposed facilities, and recommend an implementation schedule. By working to improve the efficiency of the two major pumping systems, the city has taken steps to reduce the effect of continuously increasing energy costs. The Tampa high-service pump modifications and evaluation results are dramatic evidence that regularly scheduled, detailed pump evaluations can save municipal water systems substantial energy costs, assure maximum efficiency and provide rapid cost recovery from improvements to pumping system efficiency.
