Addressing Multiple Water Quality Issues in Well Water
United Water Idaho operates a number of wells to provide drinking water to the greater Boise area. The Swift wells are located in an area of the distribution system which cannot be served by other wells or sources. However, the well water contains a number of constituents which have resulted in consumer complaints. Therefore, these wells are typically only operated during periods of high demand, usually in the summer (for 6 to 8 weeks). The main water quality issues for these wells include manganese (and some iron), the presence of the taste-and-odor causing compounds, MIB and geosmin, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and tetrachloroethylene. In order to produce regulatory compliant and aesthetically pleasing water, the Swift wells require extensive treatment. Two trains were identified to meet the finished water quality goals established for this project. The alternative treatment trains were evaluated in terms of process considerations, capital costs, and operation and maintenance costs. Includes tables, figures.
