Water utilities generally have a number of experienced personnel with specific knowledge of their distribution system's quirks, short-comings and perennial problems. Some utilities have not kept good records of problems, replacement of facilities and repairs, thereby making emergency locating and response a problem. Through geographic information systems (GIS), information and system history can be maintained centrally and is readily accessible to all who need it. This paper provides a brief description of GIS, Remote Sensing, SCADA, Automatic Meter Reading, and a Global Positioning System.
