The purpose of this study was to compare one climate controlledschool with one or more non-climate controlled schools of similarsize with respect to certain factors of cost and with respect to certainoutcomes. These schools are units of the Pinellas County, Florida, public school system and were in normal operation throughout the study. The investigators studied the normal operation of one climate controlledschool during two academic years and two summer terms and the normaloperation of two non-climate controlled schools during the same twoacademic years. They also studied a third non-climate controlledschool operating simultaneously with the summer terms of the climatecontrolled school. The purpose was to compare the cost of constructionof the climate controlled building with that of one non-climate controlledschool which was built at approximately the same time and to determinethe similarities and differences between the climate controlled and nonclimatecontrolled schools with respect to operating costs and generalquality and the comfort, achievement, conduct and health of the students.
