This paper presents the development of a miniature flexible manufacturing system (mini-FMS) controlled by using virtual instruments (VIs), and the feasibility of VIs as a tool for the development of the FMS control software. The VIs were developed with LabVIEW. The objective of this project was helping students make the connections between the concepts they learned in class and their real world experience. To this end, an open-ended project was given them to construct a mini-FMS.
