In 1988, Seattle Water initiated a demonstration project in conjunction with the US Bureau of Reclamation to evaluate the feasibility of an aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) program at the Highline well field. The Highline ASR program is designed to artificially recharge the intermediate aquifer with chlorinated, unfiltered surface water from the Cedar River during low demand periods, and then recover water during the peak summer season. A final report was released in 1994. Water quality samples were collected during the demonstration project at wellheads to characterize the native groundwater, recharge water, and water produced during the recovery phase.
