Before the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) amendments were passed, cost assessments to determine treatment technology feasibility were based on effects that would be experienced by regional and large metropolitan water systems. This approach was initially established in the 1974 SDWA and was retained in the 1986 SDWA amendments. However, feasible technologies for large systems may not be appropriate for small systems. This article discusses treatment technologies for categories of small systems for the Surface Water Treatment Rule. Includes 19 references, tables.
