Due to the rapid increase in the use of computer control in HVAC systems during the 1970s, a course on computer control fundamentals was developed for university students in mechanical engineering. The course includes material on sensors and actuators, analog and digital interface circuitry, microprocessor and microcomputer programming, and analytical techniques for determining the dynamic behavior of the overall control system. Much of the students’ time is spent in the laboratory where they are able to work with actual components of computer control systems. Since the course was first introduced, it has shown steady growth in terms of student enrollment and the material covered.
