The MIEX dissolved organic carbon (DOC) process was developed specifically to remove natural organic matter
(NOM) from raw water sources and improve the efficiency of coagulant and disinfectant
chemicals. The lower NOM and reduced disinfectant demand following MIEX treatment
results in reduction in the formation of disinfection byproducts. NOM is also known to
reduce the effectiveness of granular activated carbon (GAC) for the removal of problem
contaminants by blocking or utilizing adsorption sites. It is anticipated that the reduction
in NOM resulting from the MIEX DOC process would also improve the performance of
GAC. A pilot plant study was undertaken to directly measure the impact of MIEX pretreatment
using both coagulation and microfiltration on GAC performance. Includes 10 references, tables, figures.
