AM/FM-GIS technology often acts as a catalyst for integrating existing systems because information used in AM/FM-GIS crosses many departmental and divisional boundaries. AM/FM-GIS technology also highlights the need to plan for integration of new systems with existing systems. These systems are now increasingly being integrated with other information and control systems such as computer-aided dispatch, emergency vehicle routing, engineering design, record inventory, billing, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), infrastructure management and customer service. This paper presents an overview of AM/FM-GIS, the integration objectives associated with this technology, and the potential benefits of integrating AM/FM-GIS, customer service and SCADA systems.
