A pilot scale study was conducted at the Fort Collins Water Treatment Facility to compare the performance of existing mixed media with proposed deep-bed dual media in declining rate filters. Filter performance during the pilot study was evaluated in terms of media head loss, unit filter production, and particles released. The data collected during this study indicate that the deep-bed dual media filters will perform as well as, or better than, the existing mixed media filters. The study also showed that a relatively high initial filter loading rate of 8.5 gallons per minute per square foot (gpm/sf) does not compromise the filtered water quality in either the mixed media filters or the dual media filters.
