This powerpoint presentation begins by presenting the research goal of comparing four adsorbents in terms of their ability to remove natural organic matter (NOM) and reduce membrane fouling, using three different adsorbent dosing approaches. The four adsorbants included: alum, FeCl3, PAC, and HAOPs. The three different adsorbent dosing approaches included: pre-adsorption, direct filtration, and pre-deposition. Presentation conclusions indicate that: many adsorbents remove NOM, but the ability to reduce membrane fouling depends on the identity of the adsorbent and the dosing approach; at low doses, HAOPs remove NOM (especially high SUVA NOM) more effectively than conventional adsorbents/coagulants; for a given dose of PAC or HAOPs, fouling is less if the adsorbent is deposited on the membrane surface than if it is removed prior to filtration; it appears that pre-deposition of adsorbent is more effective at reducing fouling than adsorption and direct filtration; and, HAOPs are readily washed off membrane surfaces and so seem feasible to use in sequential cycles.
