This slide presentation outlines a study on utilizing pretreatment to reduce costs and improve performance of microfiltration/ultrafiltration membrane processes. Topics covered include: background information on membrane system design/operation; membrane optimization; cost considerations; and, keys to optimizing pretreatment. Three case studies are outlined and include: Westminster NWTF; City of Thornton, Columbine WTP; and, Town of Erie, Lynn R. Morgan WTF. Conclusions were that: pretreatment can provide significantly improved membrane performance; operational flexibility for changing water quality and future regulations; optimization of pretreatment is critical!; and, cost of pretreatment may be offset by reduced membrane costs.
