The objectives of this research were to examine the extent of variability that is likely to occur during the determination of specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA) values of fresh and treated water samples, and to elucidate the important factors responsible for this variability. Cleaning protocols for glassware, filter membrane surface chemistry, dissolved organic carbon measurements, UV measurements, adsorption of NOM by filter membranes, and interaction of colloids with the filter membrane are discussed.
