This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of simultaneous microbe concentration
from high volume samples, including charge modified microfilters, microfiltration for simultaneous
microbe recovery, ultrafiltration (UF), and 100-L UF research. Conclusions were that:
achieved simultaneous recovery of diverse
microbes from 100-L tap water samples;
average UF recovery efficiencies from 45-
89%;
PCR detection at levels of 100 oocysts, cfu
or pfu when 4-7% of water sample assayed;
Cost - Capital: ~$2500, Supplies: ~$65; Blocking and Backflushing or Elution are
an important part of the UF protocol;
Backflushing augmented the recovery by 12 to 25%;
Elution changed recovery by -6 to +22%;
Two methods not significantly different; and,
UF technique gaining visibility as an
effective and time-efficient technique for
recovering microbes from water. Includes 6 references, tables, figures.
