DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURE (DFM) GUIDELINES HAVE BEEN CREATED TO ASSIST ENGINEERS IN THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF COST EFFECTIVE RESIN TRANSFER MOLDED ADVANCED COMPOSITE STRUCTURES. GUIDELINES FOR IMPROVED MANUFACTURABILITY WERE FORMULATED BY STUDYING THE RESIN TRANSFER MOLDING (RTM) PROCESS AND IDENTIFYING COST DRIVERS, DESIGN TRADEOFFS, AND PRODUCIBILITY CONCEPTS. THE DESIGN GUIDELINES ARE PRESENTED IN A MANNER THAT INFORMS THE ENGINEER OF THE GUIDELINE, THE REASON THE GUIDELINE EXISTS, ALTERNATIVE STRATEGIES TO FOLLOW IF THE GUIDELINE MUST BE BROKEN, AND THE IMPACT OF A DEVIATION FROM THE GUIDELINE. THE INFORMATION IS PRESENTED IN THE FORM OF AN ENGINEERING HANDBOOK AND AN INTERACTIVE HYPERMEDIA ON-LINE COMPUTER DATABASE. THE COMPUTERIZED VERSION SERVES AS A PROTOTYPE DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURING TOOLS FOR IMPLEMENTATION ON ENGINEERING WORKSTATIONS.
