The South Florida Water Management District estimates that between now and 2020 public water supply withdrawals in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties will increase by approximately 330 million gallons per day (mgd). Thus, a planning and management scenario is needed that will meet the needs of utilities for future water supply. Integrated Water Resource Management is proposed as a means of ensuring that sufficient water is available to meet future demands. Integrated Water Resource Management is defined as comprehensive water resource planning and management that encompasses least-cost analysis including demand-side and supply-side management options, an open and participatory decision making process, and consideration of the multiple institutions, not just utilities, that are concerned with water supply policy.
