The South Florida Water Management District estimates that between now and 2020
public water supply withdrawals in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties will
increase by approximately 330 million gallons per day (mgd). Thus, a planning and
management scenario is needed that will meet the needs of utilities for future water
supply.
Integrated Water Resource Management is proposed as a means of ensuring that sufficient water is available to meet future demands. Integrated Water Resource
Management is defined as comprehensive water resource planning and management that
encompasses least-cost analysis including demand-side and supply-side management
options, an open and participatory decision making process, and consideration of the
multiple institutions, not just utilities, that are concerned with water supply policy. It
includes consideration of "externalities" such as environmental impacts as part of the
decision-making equation.
