DURING THE LAST DECADE THERE HAS BEEN A REALIZATION BY THE ENGINEERING COMMUNITY, PARTICULARLY THE AUTOMOTIVE COMMUNITY, THAT THERE IS A DEFINITE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PRODUCT LIFE, OIL CONSUMPTION AND EFFICIENCY WITH CERTAIN SURFACE ROUGHNESS PARAMETERS. THIS HAS DRIVEN THE TECHNOLOGY OF SURFACE MEASUREMENT METROLOGY, PARTICULARLY AS IT APPLIES TO THE HONING OF CYLINDER WALLS. SURFACE FINISH PARAMETERS, FILTERING AND METHODOLOGY HAVE PROVEN SUFFICIENT TO ALLOW PREDICTION OF SURFACE PERFORMANCE. IN PARTICULAR, THE RK PARAMETERS, PHASE CORRECTED FILTERING, IMPROVED EQUIPMENT CAPABILITY AND AN UNDERSTANDING OF SURFACE FINISH METHODOLOGY HAS RESULTED IN DRAMATIC IMPROVEMENTS IN PRODUCT QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE.
