Conservation in a Water Rich Area: A Cost Effective Source of Supply, or a Shot in the Dark
This paper presents a summary of Water District No.1's demand management program, developed in 1994 to specifically address the peak-day demands. Water District No.1 of Johnson County, Kansas, is a retail and wholesale supplier of water in the southwestern portion of metropolitan Kansas City. The primary purpose of the program is to reduce peak outdoor (summer time) water demands. A goal of a 4.6 mgd reduction in the peak day demands by the year 2000 would achieve a one year delay of the next planned expansion of the water treatment facilities. Strategies to reduce indoor water use were not included. The financial impact on lost revenues as a result of implementing such a program was of concern to the District.
