Snohomish County Public Utility District Number 1 has been operating in Snohomish County, Washington, since 1947. The District has authority to serve customers within Snohomish County, Washington, and Camano Island, Washington. In the early 1990s, the District embarked on an ambitious program to update its automation environment. The goal was to build a network that would allow it to operate more efficiently and provide vital flexibility to meet its customer's changing needs. This effort resulted in a coordinated five year plan. The future challenge for the Information Services department of the District also became clear; they needed to maintain the system that was in place and apply and leverage current capabilities and new technologies where it made sense. A portfolio management concept was decided upon. This paper discusses the development of that portfolio management system.
