THE USE OF ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE MACHINING (EDM) BY LARGE DIE MANUFACTURERS IN PROTOTYPE AND AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRIES HAS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED TRYOUT, PRESS, AND BENCHING TIME. IT HAS INCREASED DIE FLOW, MINIMIZED UNPLANNED MAINTENANCE AND PRESS LINE DOWN TIME, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME INCREASING PRODUCTION TIME PER DIE. IT HAS ALLOWED 100% TRIM EDGE CLEARANCE GOING INTO THE TRYOUT PRESSES. THIS HAS THE EFFECT OF REDUCING LEAD TIMES WHILE STILL BEING ABLE TO MAINTAIN SUPERIOR QUALITY AT REDUCED COSTS. THIS PAPER LOOKS AT THESE RESULTS IN MORE DETAIL, WHILE EXAMINING THE ROLE THAT LARGE EDM MACHINES HAVE COME TO PLAY IN THIS.
