This paper uses real operational experience to show how to develop a test and evaluation plan
that allows the direct comparison of several different membrane filtration systems. Membrane
filtration piloting is used to determine membrane flux, operating parameters, reliability of
operation, ability to meet effluent water quality requirements, pretreatment processes, power
usage, chemical usage, recovery, cleaning procedures, and operating factors. Ultimate decision
criteria, such as finished water quality requirements, should be published in advance (if possible)
to allow optimization of the pilot system to meet the owner's desires or needs. Includes figures.
