The development of a sound HVAC curriculum concentrates on scientific theories and engineering principles underlying the design, operation, and maintenance of mechanical equipment and building environmental systems, with strong emphasis on applications oriented to engineering economy and energy productivity.This paper presents an overview of the Bachelor of Science degree program in Mechanical Contracting Technology at a New Jersey College, with core requirements involving courses in Interpretation of Construction Drawings and Specifications, Building Piping System Design, HVAC Equipment, Building Environmental System Design, Estimation, Instrumentation and Control Systems, Mechanical Contracting Project Management, Construction Finance, and Construction Law. The program has been developed to meet the growing demand for technically qualified middle management personnel in mechanical construction, and this article analyzes certain unique features such as its close relationship with the industry, incorporation of various codes and industry standards into the curricula, requirement of project work in most courses, and placement of the students and graduates.
