THIS PAPER DISCUSSES PROPERTIES THAT ARE CRITICAL IN A TOOL STEEL FOR RESISTANCE TO THE DIFFERENT FAILURE MECHANISMS AND IN PERFORMANCE BETWEEN CONVENTIONALLY MANUFACTURED TOOL STEEL AND POWDER METALLURGICAL PRODUCED MATERIALS. IT WILL BE DEMONSTRATED THAT THE TWO NEW HIGH-PERFORMANCE POWDER METALLURGICAL (P/M) TOOL STEELS POSSESS A NUMBER OF UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS WHICH WILL RESULT IN ENHANCED TOOLING PERFORMANCE OVER OTHER, MORE STANDARD, TOOL STEELS USED FOR METAL FORMING APPLICATIONS.
