THIS PAPER INTRODUCES A NEW METHOD TO BE APPLIED TO CAM SYSTEMS FOR GENERATING ROUGH CUTTER PATH FOR LATHES. WITH THIS METHOD, THE CAM SYSTEM CAN AUTOMATICALLY IDENTIFY SURFACE MACHINING FEATURES WITH GEOMETRIC DATA FROM A CAD SYSTEM, DESCRIBE THE WORKPIECE WITH MACHINING FEATURES, GENERATE STOCK BAR AND MACHINING PROCESS AND FINALLY GENERATE 2-D ROUGH CUTTER PATH FOR ALL KINDS OF SHAFTS. WITH THIS METHOD AN INTEGRATED AND INTELLIGENT CAD/CAM SYSTEM CAN BE EFFECTIVELY DEVELOPED AND DESIGN-PRODUCTION INTEGRITY CAN BE REALIZED.
