This paper describes an exploratory study of the surface characteristics of media from dual media filtration units that was conducted using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The objective was to evaluate deposition reactions that occur during the process of filter media maturation. Weekly samples were collected from a new filter as it was placed in service. To provide a reference point, samples of media were taken from one of the original filters and a filter that had been in service for about one year. A summary of the characteristics of media from each filter is discussed.
