A Comprehensive Source Water Protection Program for New York City's Water Supply and the Challenge of Assessing Both Short-Term and Long-Term Program Effectiveness

To ensure the continued high quality of New York City's drinking water supply, the City developeda comprehensive long-term watershed protection program. Initiated in 1989, this program has provided the basis for a series of waivers from the filtration requirements of the SurfaceWater Treatment Rule. This paper briefly discusses the program and the challenge of assessing both its short- and long-term effectiveness. Includes figure.
