Industry is always looking for better methods and materials to prevent rust. Cadmium and zinc have been used for decades. Now the international community is looking for alternatives for both metals. Zinc alloys have been successfully used to electroplate parts for the automotive industry on several continents. Zinc alloyed with nickel, tin, iron, or cobalt give superior corrosion protection. Their individual characteristics will be discussed. Also, ideas for the proper curing of chromate conversion coatings on conventional zinc will be reviewed.
