ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT QUALIFICATIONS OF A SUPERIOR MANUFACTURING CONTROL SYSTEM IS THE ABILITY TO PERFORM AN INTENDED FUNCTION AND MAINTAIN (COST EFFECTIVELY) THAT APPLICABILITY CONCURRENTLY THROUGHOUT A PRODUCTION PROCESS' LIFECYCLE. CONVENTIONAL PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES WHICH SUPPORT A DATA PROCEDURE MODEL IS A LIMITING FACTOR IN TOTALLY ACHIEVING THAT OBJECTIVE. OBJECT-ORIENTED PROGRAMMING (OOP) LANGUAGES INVOLVE A NEW PARADIGM WHICH PROVIDES SUPERIOR MODULARITY, REUSABILITY AND MAINTAINABILITY. AN INTRODUCTORY OVERVIEW OF THIS TECHNOLOGY IS EXPLAINED. AN ASSESSMENT ON ITS IMPACT ON THE STRUCTURE OF CELLS AND CELL CONTROLLERS IS PROVIDED ALONG WITH COMPETITIVE BUSINESS ADVANTAGES AND WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE FUTURE AS THIS TECHNOLOGY MATURES.
