IN 1986, THE AIR FORCE MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY DIRECTORATE SPONSORED A MULTI-YEAR PROGRAM AIMED AT DEVELOPING TECHNOLOGIES SUITABLE FOR JOB SHOPS. ONE OF THE TECHNOLOGIES DEVELOPED UNDER THIS EFFORT WAS THE MANAGEMENT PLANNING AND CONTROL SYSTEM (MP&CS)--PLANNING AND CONTROL SOFTWARE FOR JOB SHOPS. THE EFFORT INVOLVED THE SOFTWARE DEVELOPER SAIC, SOLION DIVISION AND THREE JOB SHOPS WHO DEFINED REQUIREMENTS AND VALIDATED THE RESULTS IN PRODUCTION. THE THREE SHOPS WERE: ADVANCE TOOL & DIE COMPANY IN ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, MEYER TOOL IN CINCINNATI, OHIO, AND SEELEY ENTERPRISES IN ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO. THESE SITES HAVE CONTINUED IN AN ADVISORY CAPACITY NOW THAT THE SOFTWARE IS A COMMERCIAL OFFERING. THIS PAPER OUTLINES LESSONS LEARNED, BOTH GOOD AND BAD, UNDER THE TOOL MANAGEMENT TOPIC AREA.
