This paper compares the performance of five heat pump systems to ultimately identify the residential applications where they are most suitable. It includes ducted single-speed, dual-speed, variable-speed, and two ductless mini-split variable- speed heat pumps. The analysis is conducted in a validated building energy simulation tool called TRNSYS. A total of 480 combinations derived from the equipment types, 8 unique climates, and 12 homes varying in style, construction, and efficiency were developed and simulated. The results compare the applied seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) and heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF) relative to each heat pump’s model-calculated SEER and HSPF at ANSI/ AHRI Standard 210/240-rated test conditions. The most appropriate applications for each heat pump are based on how climate, equipment sizing, auxiliary heat, and other factors influence performance.
