This article describes life-prolonging methods employed by the Portland Water Board in Portland, Oregon to add additional years of service to old open storage reservoirs as well as a variety of covered storage facilities. A routine cleaning, maintenance, and protective program is currently functioning. Open reservoirs are cleaned every six months in the spring and fall, while steel reservoirs are inspected, repainted if necessary, and repaired annually. In order to protect open reservoirs from vandalism, Portland relies on closed-circuit television surveillance. Includes figures.
