The Philadelphia Water Department encourages youth education in mathematical and scientific fields through a Cooperative Education Program, the Philadelphia Regional Introduction for Minorities to Engineering (PRIME), and the Urban Environmental Coalition. Cooperative education gives students "real-life" work experiences; through an internship program, the Philadelphia Water Department offers such opportunities to high school and college students studying engineering, biology, chemistry, and other related fields. In addition, the water department is a consultant for the PRIME program, which helps to educate traditionally underrepresented minorities in various scientific professions. The water department is responsible for enriching the curriculum at an engineering and science high school in Philadelphia. Finally, the water department works with the Urban Environmental Coalition to encourage minority youth to pursue environmental careers; the first project shows middle school teachers how to include environmental learning in the classroom.
