A July 1989 amendment to the New York State Plumbing Fixture Law of 1980 requires that all buildings constructed or renovated after 1992 be provided with plumbing fixtures that are "water-efficient." This article describes a fixture-use procedure developed for estimating water consumption in office buildings and the utilization of the procedure to determine the reductions in water usage possible through the installation of water-efficient fixtures. Reductions of between 44 and 69 percent are estimated for water-efficient plumbing fixtures compared with older, conventional fixtures. Includes 7 references, tables, figure.
