Proposed US legislation would establish nationwide water-use efficiency standards for plumbing fixtures and appliances. The legislation is intended to reduce the need for and costs of developing new sources of raw water by reducing demand. Potential benefits of the legislation for both water and wastewater systems are assessed. Water savings that could be realized through nationwide use of low flow toilets, showerheads, and faucets are projected. Three short case studies are given. Performance of toilets, showerheads and faucet aerators are briefly discussed. Avoided costs associated with reduced water demand and wastewater flows, are mentioned. Includes 14 references, tables.
