该标准检查与保全性要求条件相关的设计和使用的参数，并审查为达到保全计划所要求的保全性特性及其相关性所需的活动。描述了实现这一目标的一般方法，并展示了在要求文件或合同中如何规定保全性特性。该标准并不是作为如何规定保全性、如何签订合同的完美指南。其目的是在品种的开发或获得/采购阶段，定义反映保全性特性要求条件时，应考虑的范围。该标准用于在预备及详细设计阶段说明保全性研究。还包括设计审查（设计审查）的保全性审查。当客户想要获得设备或品种时，本标准被用于定义保全性目的及相关保全性程序。

이 표준은 보전성 요구조건과 관련된 설계와 사용되는 파라미터를 점검하고, 보전계획에 요구되는 보전 성 특성 및 그 관계성을 달성하기 위해 필요한 활동들을 검토한다. 이 목표를 이루기 위한 일반적 접근 법을 기술하고, 요구문서 또는 계약에서 보전성 특성이 어떻게 규정되는지를 보여준다. 이 표준은 보전성을 어떻게 규정하고, 어떻게 계약을 하는지에 대한 완벽한 지침으로 의도된 것은 아니 다. 이것의 목적은 품목의 개발 또는 획득/조달 단계에서 보전성 특성의 요구조건을 반영할 때, 고려해 야 할 범위를 정의하는 것이다. 이 표준은 예비 및 상세 설계단계에서 보전성 검토를 설명하기 위해 쓰인다. 설계검토(design reviews) 의 보전성 검토도 포함된다. 고객이 장비나 품목을 획득하고자 할 때, 보전성 목적 및 관련 보전성 프로 그램을 정의하는 데 이 표준이 유용하게 사용토록 의도되었다.
