In the Rocky Mountain states region of the U.S. where the available solar energy in wintertime on a vertical south facing surface is the highest in the North American Continent, several colleges and universities have expressed a strong interest in utilizing solar energy for their heating and cooling systems. Two of the universities have central campus steam heating plants; one of which also has a central chilled water system. The paper presents three case histories outlining the pertinent findings of the solar energy feasibility studies. The largest project is the Denver Community College North Campus which involves a single building of approximately 300,000 sq. ft. with a construction budget over $10 million. The second largest is the proposed University of Colorado Basketball Arena and Conference Center at Boulder, CO, which has a seating capacity of 13,000 people and has 177,80.0 sq. ft. The third building is the Dept of Agriculture Building at the New Mexico State University Campus at Las Cruces, NM, which will be both solar heated and solar cooled.
