The objectives of this paper are to discuss the effect of water quality, critical operating parameters, and membrane characteristics on design and to present general design and equipment considerations for construction of ultrafiltration (UF) plants. An example of an UF plant design and general plant layout are presented for illustrative purposes. It should be noted that all discussions presented in this paper pertain primarily to hollow-fiber UF membranes since all the UF plants designed to date utilize this type of membrane configuration.
