THE GENERAL DYNAMICS LAND SYSTEMS DIVISION EMBARKED ON A WASTE MINIMIZATION EFFORT IN 1985. ALTHOUGH THE PROGRAM EMPHASIZED HAZARDOUS WASTE, THE SHEER VOLUME OF COOLANT DISPOSAL DEMANDED ATTENTION. APPROXIMATELY 1,500,000 GALLONS OF COOLANT WERE DISPOSED OF OFF-SITE IN 1984. RECORDS FOR THE FIRST HALF OF THE YEAR PROJECT SHOW THE 1989 DISPOSAL VOLUME TO BE 402,000 GALLONS, A 78% REDUCTION. THE REMARKABLE ASPECT OF THESE RESULTS IS THE FACT THAT NOTHING REMARKABLE WAS USED TO ACHIEVE IT. SOUND MANAGEMENT AND OFF-THE-SHELF TECHNOLOGY WERE THE ONLY TECHNIQUES USED IN OBTAINING SIGNIFICANT REDUCTIONS IN WASTE COOLANT VOLUMES.
